Boxx Meridian used at the Ashes

Cameraman Ben Tessler says:

"I provided a camera and a Boxx link for the recent Ashes Test Matches. I went along the day before and helped to set it up and showed the guys how it worked, then I left it with Cricket Australia for them to use. It was as easy as that.

Previously they used directional microwave systems which were quite limiting. The advantage of Boxx is that it can go anywhere in the field of play, into the crowd, into the stands and entertainment areas, and get a live signal out. It is a huge advantage.

This was the first time they had used a wireless system at the WACA (Western Australia Cricket Association) Ground and because the game is covered by so many broadcasters, there was a lot of wireless equipment operating in the area and we were a little bit concerned that we might strike problems with interference. We were right in the centre of the city, next door to the police station which has a lot of communications, but it wasn't an issue at all – the Boxx system performed well above its specifications in terms of line-of-sight and distance.

The receiver was positioned behind glass in the control room. This was really for the sake of convenience, but there was no need to put it anywhere else, it worked so well. This meant it was near to the main equipment, while there were five flights of stairs to the broadcast camera platform.

We used the Boxx system for the pre-game show and the entertainment in the lunchtime breaks and the big screens.

Every time I take the system out, people are amazed to see how well it works and how easy it is to operate. It is an exciting product to work with - it's revolutionising the way we can transmit live pictures without cables and giving us a way to overcome restrictions that used to be a major stumbling block in the past."

BOXX Launches UK Rental Facility

Boxx launched its hire facility and already clients such as ARRI Media and Metro Broadcasting have hired systems with great success.  ARRI Media used 2 systems for 3D transmission on a major Hollywood feature being shot in Greenwich.

Boxx is hiring a full range of SD and HD links by the day, week or month for full broadcast, presentation and video assist use.

ARRI Media uses Boxx 3D

Larry Hurt, Remote Systems Specialist for ARRI Media's Grip division, used two Boxx Meridian systems with a Russian Arm in a chase sequence for a Hollywood feature film shot in 3D on the streets of Greenwich. The scene followed a horse and carriage along the cobbled streets and needed lots of shots in different directions.

"We needed the Boxx system because we were driving in different locations," Larry explains. "With the Russian Arm, you can only have so many people inside the car, and the Director and Producers wanted to see a live picture, and as the Red cameras only work in HD, we needed to transmit the HD signal with no latency."

"The camera package consisted of a Pace 3D rig with two Red cameras. We actually used the Boxx system on top of the Russian Arm, transmitting directly from there."

"We'd already purchased a Boxx system so it was 'tried and tested' for us. Technically, we found it quite self-explanatory and simple to use. We positioned the directional antennas so that we could see the signal strength meters increasing and decreasing, so we could understand where the antennas were best positioned."

"It’s a good High Definition transmitter with no delay and it’s very simple to set up and understand.  I can’t really fault the system – I like the way it’s designed with a multitude of antennas picking up every variant of signal. It makes the best of the 5GHz frequency ranges. Other systems just have one antenna so they are only effective in one direction."

Boxx Meridian on Location with Jason Torbitt of Steadi Facilities

Jason Torbitt at Steadi Facilities provides a full live events package with a Steadicam rig, comms, operator and assistant. Adding a Boxx Meridian system means he can provide a complete solution to cover live shows. Jason explains...

"I used my Boxx Meridian system for the British Military Tournament 2010 in the large arena at Earl's Court. There were around 8,000 people in the audience for each show, which involved horses, armoured vehicles and marching bands. There were seven cameras in total, including some long lenses and mini cams on some of the vehicles and in the arena roof on the truss, so there were other wireless links operating in the arena at the same time.

I decided to add the Boxx Broadcast Receiver for this particular event, because it gives a much greater working range, up to around 200 metres, and I needed to be absolutely sure I could cover the arena.

We were the only camera operating on the arena floor, which meant we could get the low angle shots of the horses and carts and the tracking shots of the famous gun race – for this we literally ran up and down alongside the race. There was a lot of running around to do, including quick relocations, and pyrotechnics during the show – many variables. During the grand finale, we were tracking the military bands at marching pace around 2 feet from the nearest soldier.

The set-up worked fine. It was great having the confidence to walk away with the Steadicam and not having to worry about whether the picture will get back or not. As soon as we utilised a clear frequency, it worked straight away. We were working at distances of up to 100 metres, which were not necessarily line-of-sight, we even walked out through the tunnels that lead into and out the arena. We were sending HD-SDI entirely uncompressed and it matched the other cameras perfectly, with no delay. Providing full resolution HD images entirely wirelessly meant my client was delighted with the results.

We got the alternative shots, which can be quite intense and exciting – like the close-ups of the galloping horses hooves, and the pace and speed of the gun race - the shots the other cameras can't necessarily get. It helped us bring the audience and the viewers closer to the action, and provide an insight into the show that wouldn't have been possible without Steadi Facilities and Boxx.
