Zero delay RF camera system chosen for The X Factor finals at Wembley Arena
CTV Broadcast chose the Boxx Meridian system for the two wireless cameras on this season's X Factor finals at Wembley Arena.
Camera one covered the stage area with Steadicam including a return link for the Autocue whilst the second camera on the shoulder covered the 10,000 seat audience area.
Formula One invest in their first Boxx Meridian and trials the new 5-way MIMO Antenna system.
At the Korean Grand Prix, the Boxx Meridian system was used to transmit HD pictures from fixed speciality cameras mounted around the track. They used the new 5-way panel antennas at both the transmit and receive ends to allow cameras to be mounted where cabling would be difficult or just for ease of use in a cable free environment.
Live OBs - CTV says the Boxx Wireless is right for the job
CTV is responsible for numerous high profile shows and hardly needs introducing as one of Europe's largest and best-respected Outside Broadcast companies. Martin Brown, Unit Manager, explains how CTV implemented a Boxx Meridian microwave system solution recently for the MOBO awards.
"Traditionally, on a live awards event, you would use a microwave camera to roam around, get wide shots, and follow as people come up to the stage to receive their awards. A radio camera is a safe way of taking a camera into a crowd of people. The point is that for these shots, the delay isn't critical when it comes to lip-sync.
For the MOBOs, we had a Sony HDC 1500 on a Steadicam rig, which we used on the stage and in the audience. It covered some of the performances and we used it to follow people up to the stage. It was also one of the main presenter cameras, which meant that the lip-sync had to be right, so we needed a radio camera with minimal delay that would also be economically acceptable for the production.
The Boxx Meridian system was definitely the right tool for the job, because it gave us top quality, professional High Definition video with zero delay, while other radio cameras could have introduced a delay of up to three frames.
It worked brilliantly on the night. The camera operator hadn't used it before, but he liked it because it's not too heavy and the engineers found it intuitive to use. The Director, Matthew Amos, was impressed - and he does a lot of award shows. The Boxx Meridian is an admirable solution for events such as the MOBOs. It gave us a solution that the Director was happy with and made the whole job more professional and economical."
